Labour's First 100 Days: Progress or Chaos?

Tomorrow will mark Labour’s 100th day in office. A moment, you would think, for celebration and to look forward to what the Government can deliver. But if you’re inside Downing Street, is there really much to celebrate?

Labour’s first 100 days have been filled with allegations of sleaze, horror at cutting the winter fuel allowance, Taylor Swift and suit purchases. Starmer has had to axe one chief of staff in Sue Gray, empowering his new one Morgan McSweeney to try and kick start delivery. None of which is what the Prime Minister had in mind when he swept to power on the 5th July.

The 100 days have not all been a loss. Legislation has been brought forward at a ferocious rate: in recent days the Renters Rights Bill and the new Workers Rights Bill have been presented. There has been a major focus on new energy projects all while overseeing the closure of the UK’s last remaining coal power station. Laws to nationalise trains and establish GB Energy are being rushed through.

The Prime Minister has also been focusing on foreign policy – a trick famously used by Premiers who want to appear in control and statesman-like in times of difficulty. Just this week, he’s had the new NATO Chief Mark Rutte and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Downing Street, as well as calls with US President Joe Biden and ongoing diplomatic efforts in the Middle East.

None of it though has quite lifted the sense of drift since that famous night in July. All eyes will soon turn to the Budget on October 30 to see if Starmer can start to tell a story about what his government is for.
